CPS Undergraduate Programs Registration Guide

What should I be taking in my first semester?

Planning a schedule is more of an art than a science. You want to develop a course schedule that takes several factors into consideration, including:

Course Load. Are you going to be a full-time (12 credits or more) or part-time student (less than 12 credits)? Are you planning on taking courses during each semester, as well as summer?

Work. Do you plan on working while you take classes? Remember that being a full-time student is roughly equivalent to working full-time – especially when you consider the time required to prepare and/or complete assignments.

Family Obligations. Be sure to take into consideration your family obligations when planning your course load and schedule.

Course Balance. All of us have subject areas that are easier for us than others – this may be because a subject “just comes naturally” and/or you have a particular passion or interest in it. When planning your course load and schedule, be sure to consider a combination of courses that may be “challenging” and “less challenging,” either in terms of the content or the course expectations. You can also use any remaining electives you have to achieve this balance.

Transfer Credit. If you submitted transcripts from previous institutions, you will be receiving a Transfer Credit Evaluation. However, you may not have this at the time you will be registering for classes. You should avoid taking courses for which you think you might receive transfer credit.

Course Sequencing and Prerequisites. The classes for your degree program are structured to continue to build your knowledge and understanding. Prior to registering, you should always check the prerequisites listed in the course descriptions. In general, 1000-level courses should be taken before 2000-level courses; 2000-level courses should be taken before 3000-level courses; and 3000-level courses should be taken before 4000-level courses. There are some exceptions, but following this pattern will generally help you progress through your degree.
